- Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) makes carbon neutral air travel already possible today
- Every flight to Venice purchased with 100% SAF receives free climate-friendly travel to Vienna Airport with the City Airport Train and admission to the Biennale
- CCO Michael Trestl: “This fall, our environmentally conscious and art-savvy passengers can enjoy the Biennale Arte 2022 comfortably and sustainably!”
Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are the first viable alternative to fossil kerosene and a key lever to reduce CO2 emissions in the aviation industry. Austrian Airlines passengers can support the use of SAF by making their trip carbon neutral already when booking their flight. Since March of this year, Austrian Airlines has been refueling the first 1,500 tons of SAF regionally produced from Austrian used cooking oil. In the coming years, the flag carrier wants to significantly reduce carbon emissions by continuously increasing the use of SAF in its flight operations. Together with the airports of Vienna and Venice and the City Airport Train (CAT), Austrian Airlines shows that it is already possible to discover the world’s cultural highlights in a climate-friendly way.
Austrian Airlines CCO Michael Trestl: “This fall, our environmentally conscious and art-savvy passengers can enjoy the Biennale Arte 2022 comfortably and sustainably!” Every passenger from Vienna to Venice who opts to purchase 100% SAF when booking will benefit from a free round-trip ticket from Vienna City Center to Vienna Airport on the City Airport Train (CAT) and free admission to the Biennale Arte 2022. “Sustainable Aviation Fuel is one of the most important levers to decarbonize aviation, but it is not yet available in large quantities. For large-scale deployment, we need the commitment of our guests and the support of our partners along the travel chain,” says Michael Trestl.
Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport: “Climate protection is a major priority for international aviation and Vienna Airport, and the industry is already implementing extensive measures. Vienna Airport will operate in a CO₂-neutral manner in 2023 thanks to Austria’s largest photovoltaic plant, CO₂-neutral district heat, energy efficiency in building management and many other measures making it one of Europe’s first green airports. However, the most effective way to achieve CO₂-neutral flight operations is to use sustainable fuels. This is not a mere vision of the future but is already possible today.”
Getting to Vienna Airport by City Airport Train (CAT) is already completely emission-free. CAT Managing Director Christoph Korherr: “We are very happy to be a partner in this innovative project, since the City Airport Train guarantees sustainable travel to and from Vienna Airport due to the use of emission-free traction current.”
SAVE Group CEO Monica Scarpa (Venezia Airport): “The project that Venice Airport has carried out with Austrian Airlines, Vienna Airport and the Biennale is an example of collaboration that calls for the responsibility and involvement of the various actors who are part of the travel chain. We are sure that it can constitute a reference model, which can be exported to other contexts that set sustainability objectives.”
Roberto Cicutto, President of the Venice Biennale: “In 2021, the Biennale started a process of revisiting all its activities according to consolidated and recognized principles of environmental sustainability. For 2022, the goal is to extend the achievement of the “carbon neutrality” certification, obtained in 2021 for the 78th Venice Film Festival, to all the activities planned by the Biennale: the 59th International Art Exhibition, Festivals of Theater, Music and Dance and the 79th Venice International Film Festival. “
