- Successful validation in accordance with the world’s most demanding environmental management system EMAS for the reporting year 2022
- EMAS introduction as an important step towards achieving Austrian Airlines’ environmental goals
- Environmental management system supports systematic and sustainable improvements throughout the company
Austrian Airlines was successfully validated for the first time according to the demanding European EMAS regulation (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) and certified with the international standard ISO 14001 for environmental management systems. Like other Lufthansa Group companies, Austrian Airlines is thus setting an important example of corporate environmental responsibility. The company’s environmental management system was reviewed in detail by external auditors in 2023. The audit particularly emphasised the high level of competence and commitment of the employees responsible for introducing EMAS.
“The successful introduction of an environmental management system to the highest standard enables systematic and sustainable improvements in our business activities. We are proud that Austrian Airlines is following a route that will support us in achieving our environmental goals,” says CEO Annette Mann.
EMAS is a voluntary instrument of the European Union that helps companies and organisations of all sizes and from all sectors to continuously improve their environmental performance. EMAS registration includes all the requirements of the international environmental management standard ISO 14001, supplemented by additional requirements. In its first Environmental Report, Austrian Airlines reports on its environmental performance for the reporting year 2022 (German only).
Austrian Airlines continuously pursues projects and measures with the aim of reducing its environmental impact and using resources as efficiently as possible. As part of Lufthansa Group, Austrian Airlines focuses in particular on accelerated fleet modernisation, the continuous optimisation of flight operations, the use and further development of sustainable aviation fuels and offers for private travellers and corporate customers to make their air travel more sustainable.
