Cold, colder, coldest – Austrian Airlines launches flights to Ivalo in northern Finland

  • First flight to Ivalo successfully completed
  • New destination in Finnish Lapland for nature lovers and fans of cross-country skiing, ice fishing and the Northern Lights
  • Weekly flights until the beginning of March for those looking for guaranteed snow and sub-zero temperatures
  • After Rovaniemi and Kittilä, Ivalo is the third destination to be added to Austrian Airlines’ Finland portfolio – a niche that is enjoying steadily growing demand

Successful first flight by Austrian Airlines to Ivalo on Saturday, 25 January 2025: After a punctual take-off at 09:30 in Vienna Schwechat, flight OS339 touched down in Ivalo for the first time after a flight time of just under three and a half hours. On board: numerous enthusiastic winter sports fans and cold weather enthusiasts, for whom a winter holiday dream in the north of Finland is now coming true. A committee of representatives from Ivalo Airport and the Finnish airport operator Finavia ensured a warm welcome and plenty of Finnish chocolate for the Austrian Airlines passengers around 234 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle.

Ivalo – the largest town in northern Lapland with just over 3,000 inhabitants – is the northernmost airport in Finland and the ideal starting point for cross-country skiing fans, as the Inari holiday region has several hundred kilometres of well-groomed cross-country ski trails. Ski hiking, sledging and aurora snowmobile safaris are also activities that Ivalo is known for. During the day, visitors can observe reindeer in their natural environment, while at night the Northern Lights light up the sky.

Austrian Airlines will serve the route every Saturday in the 2025 winter timetable until the beginning of March.
